Tehri is a yummy rice dish from India. It comes from two states – Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. People there have been making Tehri for many years. It is a very old and special food.

Ingredients

  • Basmati rice – 1 cup (washed and soaked for 20 minutes)
  • Potato – 1 (medium-sized, chopped)
  • Green peas – ½ cup
  • Tomato – 1 (chopped)
  • Onion – 2 (finely chopped)
  • Green chili – 1-2
  • Turmeric powder – ½ tsp
  • Red chili powder – 1tsp
  • Coriander powder – 1/2 tsp
  • Cumin powder – 1 tsp
  • Kitchen king masala – 2 tsp
  • Cumin seeds – 1 tsp
  • Salt – to taste
  • Oil – 4 tbsp
  • Water – 1 1/2 cups
  • Fresh coriander leaves – for garnishing

Tehri is made with rice and vegetables. It looks like yellow rice because it has turmeric in it. The best thing about Tehri is how simple it is. You don’t need many things to cook it. Just rice, some vegetables, and a few spices. That’s all!

Many families eat Tehri for lunch or dinner. It is a comfort food. That means it makes people feel happy and at home. Tehri is not too spicy, so kids and adults both like it.

Step by Step Instructions

Step 1

Heat oil in a pan and add cumin seeds.
Once they start to crackle, add chopped onions and sauté until golden brown.

Step 2

Add red chilli powder , turmeric powder, cumin powder, coriander powder and salt and mix well.

Step 3

Add potatoes, peas and cook with all the spices. Sauté for 5-7 minutes.

Add chopped tomatoes and cook until soft.

Step 4

Add the soaked rice along with kitchen king masala and stir gently.

Add water with green chillies and let it come to a boil.

Step 5

Cover the lid and cook for 1 whistle. The rice should be cooked and the water is absorbed.

Step 6

Turn off the heat and let it rest covered for a few minutes.
Garnish with fresh coriander leaves and serve hot.
