  • 1 tbsp chana dal
  • 4-5 tomatoes chopped
  • 2-3 green chilies,
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp red chili powder (adjust to taste)
  • Salt to taste
  • Few curry leaves
  • 2 tbsp chopped coriander leaves

Step by Step Instructions

In a large pan, heat 2 tablespoons of oil. Add 1 teaspoon of mustard seeds along with chana dal. Let mustard seeds splutter. Add few curry leaves with green chillies. Sauté for a few seconds.

Add the chopped tomatoes, 1/2 teaspoon turmeric, 1 teaspoon red chili powder, and pinch on hing.

Cook until the tomatoes break down and the oil starts to separate from the masala (about 5-7 minutes).

Add the cooked rice to the tomato masala. Gently mix until the rice is well-coated with the masala.

Season with salt and add a tablespoon of lemon juice if desired.

Garnish with chopped cilantro.
